The anti-food waste technology platform Gander has appointed ex-Asda boss Andy Clarke as a non-executive director as it looks to “lead the charge towards a better, more sustainable world”.

As well as his roles at Asda, he previously held key roles at Morrisons, Matalan and Iceland, at which he gained experience in waste reduction and recycling. Clarke, who is currently executive chairman at the meat business Farmison, will help the app work with grocers to streamline their waste management processes.

The app, which was created in 2019, has been nominated for the prestigious Earthshot prize for helping reduce food waste and carbon emissions, with nominations from Cranfield University, WRAP and CleanTech advancements.

Clarke’s appointment comes amid discussions about the cost of living and food price hikes, with supermarkets set to be grilled over rising costs.

Clarke said he was looking forward to making a contribution to the business, as “soaring food prices and a widespread cost of living crisis” means Gander presents a “strong opportunity for shoppers to revolutionise their regular food bills” while also helping retailers to “substantially reduce food waste and financial losses”.

Gander managing director and co-founder Mike Osborne said Clarke’s “unwavering commitment to waste reduction and recycling within the food retailing industry is unparalleled”.

“With his extensive business acumen and profound industry knowledge, we are confident that he will supercharge Gander’s ambitious growth plans. We want to reshape consumer behaviour, revolutionise the fight against food waste, and lead the charge towards a better, more sustainable world.”
