Shell’s head of renewable energy Thomas Brostrom is leaving the oil and gas company after CEO Wael Sawan abandoned plans to cut oil production and is instead prioritising shareholder payouts.

The oil company announced Brostrom’s exit in an internal email seen by Bloomberg, which was confirmed by a company spokesman.

“Thomas Brostrom has elected to leave Shell to pursue an external opportunity,” a spokesperson said.

Brostrom has declined to comment on why he’s leaving or where he’s going next.

Bromstrom joined the energy provider from wind giant Orsted as the company planned to grow renewable energy operations as part of its strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions under previous CEO Ben van Beurden.

In March 2023, Shell announced its plans to eliminate Brostrom’s role to split it into regions.

Bromstrom will be succeeded by Greg Joiner, currently VP Shell Energy Australia, as head of energy for Europe and emerging markets power. Ajay Shah will lead renewable generation in Asia while Mike Parker will head offshore wind engineering.
