A new creative campaign by InSinkErator has set out to uncover the drastic consumption plastic bottles in the UK by visually how this figure is proportioned across major cities.

The campaign was created around data that highlighted the magnitude of the UK’s bottled water habit. InSinkErator used this data to understand how this broke down by city and created detailed creative images to highlight the issue in a shocking way.

According to reports, every year Brits are buying 7.7 billion plastic bottles of water which is contributing significantly to climate change.

Single use-plastics in London

InSinkErator has estimated that, due to its large population, Londoners make up nearly a seventh of this plastic pollution. This amounts to an estimated over one billion bottles of water being bought annually. To put this into perspective, this would amount to approximately 890 times the length of the River Thames if the bottles were laid vertically.

Plastic bottles in Birmingham

As Birmingham has the second largest population in the UK, the estimated number of water bottles purchased annually reaches nearly over 120 million.

To visualise this issue, the campaign compared Birmingham’s consumption to the Bullring shopping centre, where they found that the estimated annual number of bottles bought equated to around 446,287 times the height of the shopping centre when stacked vertically.

Leeds’ plastic problem

Leeds’ estimated contribution amounts to over 85 million plastic bottles of water bought annually. This amount of plastic could tower 247,694 times higher than the Town Hall when stacked vertically.
