Aldi is partnering with Shell to install new rapid 50kwh Shell Recharge electric vehicle chargers at 11 of its stores across the UK.

Stores at locations including Hinkley, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Welshpool and New Maldon will receive four of the chargers, which customers will be able to pay for via the Shell Recharge app.

Through the app, they will also be able to access details including charger location, availability information and the estimated cost of a charging session.

Following the installation at the first 11 stores, Aldi will explore expanding the partnership across the UK.

The partnership comes as the supermarket has made efforts to improve sustainability, for example by using polytags to track milk recycling rates and introducing refill stations.

As it aims to reach its net zero targets, the UK is currently seeking to maintain a foothold in the electric vehicle industry, bolstered by the recent amount of a deal for a Somerset-based Jaguar Land Rover gigafactory. By 2030 it is anticipated that there will be between 8 million hybrid or electric vehicles on UK roads.

“Our ambition is for 90% of UK drivers to be within 10 minutes of a Shell rapid charger by 2030, whether on one of our forecourts or at other convenient destinations. Now Aldi customers will be able to charge up while they shop. Our 2023 EV drivers survey shows 63% of UK respondents say the availability of charge points influences where they shop and travel,” said Shell Mobility UK general manager, Bernie Williamson.

“We are committed to being an environmentally responsible retailer and we want to help our customers live more sustainably. We are pleased to be partnering with Shell for this trial, to provide our customers with access to rapid charging while they shop our high-quality, affordable products in store,” said Aldi UK real estate director George Brown.

Hi I’m simply amazed that Aldi has chosen Shell as their chosen supplier, as a long term driver of an all electric car driving 50k miles a year, im surprised they didn’t go to InstaVolt as I have found them the most reliable charging network out there. MOST big name suppliers are very unpredictable, that is why Bannatyne health clubs and McDonald’s use this company.
