The House of Lords and Climate Change Committee (CCC) is launching an inquiry into electric vehicles (EVs).
The inquiry will seek to understand if the government is progressing towards both its 2030 and 2035 deadlines, with a particular focus on passenger cars, as well as exploring the main barriers to doing so.
It will also aim understand the costs, alongside the benefits, associated with the 2030 end date of sales of new petrol and diesel cars and vans in the UK.

CCC chair Kare Parminter urges the public to share their experiences with EVs in the UK.
“We want to find out from industry, local authorities, and all others with an interest in decarbonising transport, what the government needs to do to encourage greater take up of EVs ahead of their 2030 and 2035 targets,” she added.
The CCC is seeking evidence in topics including charging infrastructure, acquiring an EV and end of life disposal.
“The rubber is now hitting the road – as we can’t get to net zero without individuals making changes to our lives, how we travel and what we buy,” said Parminter.
The deadline for submitting information is Friday 15 September 2023.
Currently the UK EV market is looking bright. As of July 20230, there were more than 840,000 electric cars on UK roads than at the start of the year and a further 520,000 hybrid cars. In fact, a recent report found one battery EV registered every 60 seconds in July.
