Asda reduced its carbon footprint by 8% in 2022, as stated in its latest ESG report.

The supermarket has reduced its Scope 1 and 2 by 40% from a 2015 baseline and is on the way to hitting a 50% reduction target by 2025 and reaching net zero emissions by 2040.

Asda states it is “continuing to improve the measure measurement of Scope 3 emissions” and aims to set targets for 2050. From what the supermarket was able to measure, Asda has reduced scope 3 emissions by 6.6% since 2020.

Additionally, the supermarket has committed to a science-based carbon reduction target, which is in the process of being approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) and is expected later this year.

Asda also revealed in 2022 it launched mandatory carbon data requirements for its own brand suppliers. To date, over 70% of its suppliers have submitted Scope 1 and 2 emission reduction targets and over 25% of those have been approved by the SBTi.

Asda’s green changes

To reach its targets, the retailer increased the proportion of own-label packaging that can be recycled at the kerbside to 88% (with a further 4.7% recyclable in store) and introduced a ‘Refill Price Guarantee’ on its in-store refill zones, guaranteeing that unpackaged products are cheaper than their packaged equivalents.

The supermarket recycled, reused or repurposed 86% of its operational waste and once again, sent zero operational waste to landfill.

Last month, Asda became the first UK supermarket to launch sustainable toilet paper The Good Roll in its stores.
