The proposed deposit return scheme needs to offer consumers flexibility as well as alternatives that are cost-effective and efficient, says Polytag.

The comments come after the British Retail Consortium (BRC) reported that the deposit return scheme is set to cost retailers £18.8 billion a year from 2025, adding costs for both consumers and retailers.

A spokesperson for Polytag stated: “it’s important to consider alternatives that are both cost-effective and efficient.

“The BRC call for a pause contrast with recent innovative efforts from Polytag, which has been adopted by retailers like Ocado and Co-op, and presents a promising solution.”

Last month, Ocado and Polytag teamed up to trial the first ever digital recycling reward scheme, paying customers 20p for each piece of packaging they scan and recycle using their smartphones.

At the time of launch, Ocado senior packaging sustainability manager Laura Fernandez said Ocado shoppers have “an appetite for the scheme” as 80% were likely or very likely to scan a QR code for a deposit return.

From this trial, Polytag has concluded that a digital deposit return scheme using QR codes and an app is “already proven and ready to implement.”

“[Ocado’s] digital deposit return scheme demonstrates that leveraging mobile technology can offer consumers the flexibility to choose between convenient kerbside returns and retail options. These alternatives challenge the assumption that ‘return to retail’ is the only model,” Polytag’s spokesperson added.

“Government endorsement of adaptable regulations is crucial to stimulate recycling innovation. With environmental urgency in mind, it’s imperative for industry leaders like BRC to align with progressive recycling solutions. And not ‘pause’ any longer.”
