Dragon’s Den’s Deborah Meaden has joined the judging panel of sustainable film festival Big Syn International.

Meaden said: “Films have a powerful role in showing us the big-picture of sustainability and its significance for our own lives through relatable stories from across the world.

“This is how Big Syn Film Fest is spreading awareness about sustainability and the UN’s Global Goals to inspire positive action. I look forward to viewing and judging the entries and sharing my experience with everyone,” she added.

Big Syn Institute, a UN civil society organisation, is inviting sustainable businesses to submit films and videos. Winning shorts or videos (max 5 min) and social media videos (59 sec) will be screened on Piccadilly Lights in October 2023.

Businesses upholding sustainability from across the country are encouraged to share their stories of positive change, hope and innovation on local as well as global issues; from sustainable business practices, climate change, DEI, sustainability in business, sustainable investments, net zero targets, ESG, CSR, mental health, cost of living crisis, the migrant crisis, poverty, hunger and war.

Meaden will be joined by other judges including other leaders in sustainability such as BT Group head of environmental sustainability Gabrielle Giner, Freegle founder Cat Fletcher, and Professor Ioannis Ioannou from London Business School.

The festival’s co-founder and Director Dr Ragini G Roy said Meaden’s involvement is a “testimony to her commitment to sustainability and helping the civic society evolve as a more sustainable one.

“Since 2019, the festival has reached over 8 million in 90 countries to educate people about the Sustainable Development Goals and inspire positive actions to address local as well as global issues, both big and small; all through the power of meaningful and relatable films,” she added.

Businesses can enter via two categories:

  • Piccadilly Lights Spotlight Prize, for max. 5 min videos or films and 59 sec social media videos can be submitted here.
  • Ad films, ESG, corporate or brand videos can be submitted here.

Entries are open until 30 September 2023.
