Dunelm’s 2040 net zero targets have been approved by Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

The company becomes the first homeware retailer to have its targets approved and committed to reducing its absolute Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 50% before 2030, as well as 90% by 2040.

Dunelm chief executive Nick Wilkinson said: “We are building sustainability into all that we do, not only because it’s the right thing to do, but because it’s a business imperative that supports our vision to be the UK’s most trusted and valuable brand in homewares and furniture.

“We’re delighted to have received approval of our ambitious targets from the SBTi.”

“We are increasingly focused on achieving our goals in this area while recognising that there’s more we can do to lead the homewares industry in reducing our environmental impact on the planet,” added Wilkinson.

Dunelm’s green initiatives

After finding over 50% of Dunelm’s Scope 1 carbon emissions are attributable to its home delivery network (HDN) fleet, the retailer introduced nine new tractor units, powered by compressed natural gas, as well as an additional electric vehicle to support store deliveries.

The brand’s circular product schemes allow its customers to donate unwanted textiles and homewares to their nearest store, with items being rehomed, reused, recycled or turned into brand new products.

Other sustainability initiatives include a furniture and mattress recycling scheme and participation in the Textiles 2030 pledge, which aims to halve carbon emissions, reduce water footprint by 30% and to introduce more circular approaches by 2030.
