Better Cotton launches traceability platform for fashion retailers

Better Cotton has launched a traceable supply chain platform for fashion and textile sectors.

Through the platform, retailers and brands will be able to verify the origin and journey of the raw materials within their products and use data to address the potential adverse effects of their activities on human rights and the environment.

Better Cotton chief executive officer Alan McClay said: “Traceability at scale for cotton will drive a seismic shift within our industry’s supply chains.

“Better Cotton’s traceability solution is poised to help the industry deliver that shift. Never before has transparency been as imperative as it is now to our retail and brand members.”

The organisation has worked closely with a network of member retailers and brands, including H&M Group and Marks & Spencer, to ensure that fashion companies can accurately trace and disclose the origin of raw materials, and comply with emerging regulations.

“We’re grateful to every organisation that has helped shape the development of the Better Cotton Platform and stand committed to its constant improvement,” McClay added.

M&S head of materials and sustainability Katharine Beacham said that 100% of the cotton the company sources is from “more responsible sources.”

“However, across the industry, the global supply chain remains particularly complex.”

    Can it be clarified how H&M or M&S have helped to shape things? As Better Cotton is a profit led organisation, how can we trust that their interests are truly independent and not just directed by some of the worst polluters in the clothing industry? If these brands manipulate the system by using their massive buying power and dictating policy that fits in with their own business agenda, is BC relevant?
