Monsoon has launched a sparkling array of recycled sequins in its latest collection, as part of its ‘statement of intent’ on sustainability.

The five pieces, which have been shared to mark the upcoming party season, are all made from recycled PET.

Having already been worn by high flyers like Iraina Mancini at Secret Garden Party and Edith Bowman at Frieze’s 20th anniversary party at Koko – the collection marks Monsoon’s first step towards lower impact sequins.

To create the designs, the retailer collaborated with the Centre of Sustainable Fashion and the London College of Fashion, UAL in order to interrogate every step of the brand’s sequin supply chain.

They performed research into the challenges and opportunities within the sequin supply chain and worked together in order to identify partners to create the recycled sequins.

Monsoon have pledged that 90% of its collections will have a sustainable element by 2025.

Adena Brands’ (Monsoon, Accessorize and East) recently recruited sustainability director Anneli Hallik said: “It has been an exciting deep dive into the world of sequins; exploring how sequins are made, what they are made of, who makes them and where are they made.”

“This recycled PET sequin collection is the first step on our sequin journey, where we will keep on working with both our existing sequin suppliers as well as with new collaboration partners to develop innovative materials and processes”.

Monsoon design director Caroline Jackson added: “We view this collection as a statement of intent. We have used recycled PET sequins; and although after doing research with our partners we think that this is the most suitable, commercially available sequin on the market, we know that this doesn’t go far enough”.

“This fashion-forward collection goes some way towards showing what you can do with using lower impact sequins”.
