Primark has revealed that more than 55% of the clothes it has sold this year have been made from sustainable materials, up from 45% in 2022.

The announcement came as the fashion retailer launched its latest sustainability and ethics report, which outlined how it is boosting its sustainable offering.

It has sold 3 million units of circular clothing since launching a new collection this year and aims to have all its clothes made of recycled or more sustainably-sourced materials by 2030.

Primark unveiled sustainability strategy Primark Cares in 2021 to reduce fashion waste, halve carbon emissions across its value chain and improve the lives of its workers.

Primark Cares director Lynne Walker said this year was about “gaining momentum” and “scaling and embedding the principles, programmes and processes” to reach its sustainably sourced 2030 target.

“We continue to work with our partners and suppliers to drive change, and we’ve learnt more than ever how collaboration is crucial for delivery of our Primark Cares commitments,” she added.

“We’ve also been focused on upskilling and training our colleagues, who are an integral part of how we make change happen in our business.”

Walker said it was also critical how Primark could “inspire and educate” its customers.

“This includes being more transparent about where and how our clothes are made, the changes we are making and what it means for them, and the issues and what role the fashion industry and they, as customers, can play in this change.”
