Walkers is rolling out new packaging made from 50% recycled plastic across its Sunbites range.

The packaging has been sourced using a mass balance approach, where materials are traced through the supply chain.

The launch forms part of PepsiCo Positive (pep+), Walkers’ parent company’s sustainability plan, which includes an ambition in Europe to eliminate virgin fossil-based plastic in crisp and snack bags by 2030.

Elsewhere, the crisp company rolled out paper multipack bags across its Baked brand to all UK supermarkets following a successful trial exclusively at Tesco.

PepsiCo sustainable packaging lead Gareth Callan said the company is “proud” of the progress made to “reduce fossil-based plastic” and is “working hard” to change its packaging.

“To help us do this at scale, we are urging the UK government to recognise the role that chemical recycling and other emerging mechanical technologies could play in creating demand for food-contact flexible plastics – including the modification of the Plastic Packaging Tax to stimulate a circular economy for packaging in the UK,” Callan added.
