The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated Trainline’s targets to reach net zero by 2040.

It has also validated Trainline’s near-term targets to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions 55.2% by 2030.

To meet its aims, the company will deploy renewable electricity and lower-carbon gas alternatives to reduce its scope 1 and 2 emissions.

There is also a focus on supplier engagement due to its “large proportion” of scope 3 emissions in its carbon footprint, Trainline said.

The train booking app is aiming that 80% of its suppliers covering purchased goods and services will have science-based targets by 2028.

Trainline chief financial officer Pete Wood said: “We promote rail and its credentials as a greener travel choice than car or plane, so that means we must also lead by example when it comes to the environmental impact of our own business.

“We have committed to net zero through these science-based targets to show we are determined to substantially reduce our carbon emissions, and to play our part in addressing the climate change challenge facing society.”

Last week, Trainline’s released a new yearly-wrap up which revealed the amount of carbon emissions its customers saved in 2023 through personal user behaviour.

The personalised ‘Your Year in Train’ feature, similar to Spotify Wrapped, highlights the amount of carbon emissions saved traveling by train instead of car and what each carbon footprint equates to regarding washing machine usage and tree absorption.
