Championship team Watford FC has committed to reaching net zero by 2040 while targeting a 50% reduction in baseline carbon emissions by 2030.

The football club has joined the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework which aims to achieve a clear trajectory for the global sports community to combat climate change.

Watford FC chief executive and chairman Scott Duxbury said the club is “delighted to further reinforce [its] sustainability efforts”.

“We’re proud of the work that’s already been undertaken within the club when it comes to tackling the climate crisis, however we’re determined to make further progress and we believe signing up to this framework will enable us to make a tangible, positive impact on the environment,” Dubry added.

Watford FC’s announcement that it will join the UN Framework, comes after Premier League side Arsenal FC became the first to do so in 2020.

At the time, Arsenal operations director Hywel Sloman said: “Arsenal is committed to leading the way on sustainability among Premier League clubs and we are proud to be the first club to sign up to the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework.

“Together with our partners, we’ve already implemented a number of environmentally-friendly practices across the club,” he added.

“This includes becoming the first Premier League club to switch to 100% green electricity since the beginning of our partnership with Octopus Energy in 2016, and a new partnership with aluminium packaging company Ball Corporation, which is designed to help us and our millions of fans around the world reduce our impact on the environment,” continued Sloman.
