Amazon is adding 473MW of clean energy from an offshore wind farm in Scotland after singing a corporate power purchase agreement with French utility giant Engie

Located in the Moray Firth in the northeast of Scotland, the 882MW Moray West wind farm is currently under construction and will generate power in 2024.

Amazon director of energy Lindsay McQuade said projects such as Moray West will play a “critical role” in the online giant reaching net zero in its operations by 2040.

“We are on track to meet our ambitious goal of powering our global operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025, and in 2022, 90% of electricity consumed by Amazon was attributable to renewable energy sources.”

The ecommerce giant announced 39 new renewable energy projects across Europe last year, adding more than 1GW of clean energy capacity to grids in the region.

Amazon’s investment in solar and wind projects has led the company to become the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy, a position it has held since 2021.

The company now has more than 500 wind and solar projects globally, and once operational, they are expected to generate more than 77,000 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean energy each year.

“Transitioning to carbon-free energy sources is one of the most impactful ways to lower carbon emissions, and is part of our Climate Pledge commitment to reach net zero carbon across our operations by 2040,” McQuade added.
