Heineken reduces absolute emissions across all scopes by 21%

Alcohol company Heineken has reduced its absolute emissions across scope 1, 2 and 3 by 21% since 2018.

In its latest annual report, Heineken revealed it reduced its emissions in scope 1 and 2 by 34% and 20% in scope 3.

The brewery aims to reach net zero in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and net zero across its whole value chain by 2040.

Elsewhere, Heineken maintained water usage in its breweries to 3.0 hectolitre per hectolitre (hl/hl) in water-stressed areas and improved to 3.2 hl/hl on average worldwide.

The company also launched its global circularity strategy focused on packaging, where it aims to increase reusability, maximise recycled content, and improve recyclability.

Other achievements the company saw last year was having its net zero and forest, land and agriculture (FLAG) targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Elsewhere, the brewery invested £25m to install heat pumps in its Manchester brewery, as part of its efforts to decarbonise its UK sites by 2030.

It also teamed up with Siemens to reduce carbon emissions by 50% at 15 Heineken breweries and malt houses worldwide by 2025.

The brands collaborated on a project using an energy digital twin to simulate and analyse a typical Heineken brewery in the virtual world, identifying where significant energy savings could be made.
