KP Snacks to cut over 100 tonnes of plastic packaging

Hula Hoops manufacturer KP Snacks is set to cut over 100 tonnes of plastic packaging annually, as it invests in new flow wrap equipment.

The new flow wrapping process will see a 35% reduction in plastic packaging for six-packs across three of its most popular snack brands: Discos, Roysters and Frisps.

The latest move follows the snack business’ ongoing commitment to using as little plastic as possible. Since 2014, KP Snacks has cut 1,100 tonnes of plastic packaging across its brands, marking an overall reduction of 15%.

The majority of brands in KP Snacks portfolio, which includes Hula Hoops, Skips, McCoy’s, Popchips, Tyrrell’s, Pom-Bear, Space Raiders and Nik Naks, already use reduced packaging solutions.

KP Snacks packaging technology manager John Leslie said: “Protecting the environment is one of the core pillars of our ‘People and Planet’ programme, and we are committed to taking a responsible and proactive approach to safeguarding nature.

“We remain focused on reducing both our plastic packaging and carbon emissions in any way that we can.”

KP Snacks has also predicted the reduced volume of the new packaging will lead to 620 fewer lorry journeys annually and fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

Last year, KP Snacks launched its ‘People and Planet’ programme to outline its sustainability goals. As members of Wrap’s UK Plastic Pact, the company has also committed to a series of targets to reduce its plastic packaging and bolster its recyclable content by 2025.
