Aldi is to launch recyclable paper wine bottles in a bid to offer “greener choices” as it looks to “drive sustainable change”.

The new packaging, which is thought to be a first for UK supermarkets, will roll out across the discount grocer’s own-brand Cambalala South African Shiraz and South African Sauvignon Blanc.

The bottles created in partnership with sustainable packaging firm Frugalpac, are made from 94% recycled carboard, lined with a food-grade pouch, and are five times lighter than a normal glass bottle.

Aldi UK managing director of buying Julie Ashfield said: “Shoppers are striving to become more sustainable in their everyday lives, looking for small ways to make a big difference for our planet.

“Our buying teams are continuously thinking of how we can evolve our ranges to offer greater value and greener choices. We are proud to be the first supermarket to launch an own-brand paper bottle, helping to drive sustainable change.”

It’s the latest in a number of sustainability initiatives from the supermarket, which recently began using AI to track and verify its flexible plastic packaging recycling.
