Home and garden retail brand Wilko has launched an online tool and equipment rental service, as it looks to highlight its eco credentials.

Called ‘Wilkohire’, the site offers shoppers the chance to rent tools and equipment for gardening and landscaping, cleaning, painting and decorating, drilling and breaking, sawing and cutting, and mowing.

The items are delivered directly to people’s homes and then collected from that location after the tool rental period ends. Alternately, consumers can pick up their orders from depots around the UK.

The move comes amid a landscape in which renting products is increasingly seen as good for the environment, as it keeps goods in circulation for longer. Fashion retailers like Asos and Selfridges have made significant plays in this area.

The new service, run by new owner CDS Superstores, is operated in partnership with easyToolhire.

The retailer said this is the first time it has been able to offer specialist equipment to get “even the most ambitious DIY projects done”.

Wilkohire is the latest development from wilko.com since the site relaunched late last year. Over 100,000 items covering Wilko own-brand and other well-known brands are on the website.

Last year, it was announced that the Wilko name will disappear from UK high streets, with all of its 400 stores closing, after a rescue deal for the chain fell through.
