Ikea is hosting more car boot events where locals sell and buy pre-owned goods, as it looks to encourage its shoppers to shop more sustainably..

The retailer held several pilot car boot sales return events last year and is now ramping up the initiative as it plans to host car boot sales at its Cardiff, Exeter and Milton Keynes stores this May.

Ikea pledges to become more eco-conscious comes as more customers become aware of the environmental impact of their purchases. The car boot sales, which are free to attend, give local people the chance to sell and buy unwanted home furnishing goods, decorations and other items.

Michaela Quinlan, chief commercial officer, Ikea, UK and Ireland, said: “We know that the way people shop is changing. The cost-of-living crisis and an increasing awareness of environmental issues is reshaping how customers value possessions.

“Having seen the success of last year’s pilot, we’re happy to now be rolling out car boots across more of our stores.

“Giving people more opportunities to live and shop sustainably continues to be a focus for us at IKEA and we look forward to welcoming more people, so they can grab a bargain while ensuring quality pre-loved homeware has a chance at finding a new home.”

The goods being sold do not have to be Ikea products.

In addition to the car boot events, Ikea also offers a BuyBack & Resell service, which allows customers to sell unwanted IKEA items back to the retailer to gain credit to use in-store, as well as a Reshop & Reuse service, where customers can buy discontinued products.
