A raft of UK companies including Burberry, Currys, AG Barr, NatWest and Tate & Lyle have been named as European Climate Leaders in a new report published this week.
Compiled by the Financial Times, the report highlights the 600 European companies that have shown the greatest reductions in their Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity over a five-year period (2017-22).
Collaborations with organisations such as the Science Based Targets Initiative and CDP are also taken into account.
The report found that “despite chafing at green regulations, companies are making headway on cutting carbon emissions”.
Aerospace and defence company Nats topped the list of UK climate leaders, with the London Stock Exchange Group coming in second place.
Other climate leaders in the list of UK businesses included Burberry (textiles, apparel and luxury goods), AG Barr (food, beverages and tobacco) NatWest (financial services) and Currys (retail and ecommerce).

Nick Hampton, chief executive of Tate & Lyle – which was given a score of 71.3 in the list – said: “We are proud to be named as a European Climate Leader and to be recognised for the actions we are taking to accelerate the decarbonisation of our business and supply chain.”
Earlier this month Tate & Lyle said it was committed to being a leader in climate action with the launch of new greenhouse emissions reduction targets which it aims to be delivered by 2028.
“Our recently announced new science-based targets deliver greater and faster GHG emissions reduction and are a clear demonstration of our commitment to care for our planet and its natural resources for the benefit of future generations,” continued Hampton.
